Tasmanian Youth Championships & Schools Regatta

The series is now complete and full results are below.

On Saturday a great days sailing with light winds for the morning session and a nice sea breeze for the afternoon session.

The morning session got away from 11:45 with four 29ers, and a 49er FX B14 and Mosquito cat heading off into a light SSE breeze of 5 knots slowly building.

At 11:48 six Laser Radials a Laser 4.7 three Flying 11s a Sabre and Pacer got away on a short course.

And at 11:51 the balance of the fleet being four International Cadets two Optimists and a Sabot headed off on an even shorter course.

The breeze was slowly building and by the finish Westwind (29er) sailed by William Wallace and Brendan Crisp took the gun from Jasmin Galbraith & Chloe Fisher in their new 49er FX third home was HHHugo Hamilton and William Sargent.

First Laser was Red Samuel King and first Flying 11 Helter Skelter Ethan Galbraith and Oscar O'Donoghue and first Int CadetShmoken Hugo Allison and Grace Hooper.

On Yardstick Westwind from Helter Skelterand Shmoken third.

Race 2 got away from 12:43 as the breeze slowley built to 10 knots on a slightly longer course for the first two starts.

This time around there was an extra NS14 an Int Cadet as well as a Sabre in the middle fleet.

This time the 49er FX cleared out to take the gun well ahead of the first 29erWestwind with Bumps (NS14) Josh Eggins and Aiden Wilkie home in second.

First Flying 11 was River Rat Oliver Prichard and Finn Buchanan first Int CadetShmoken first Laser Red.

On yardstick River Rat first Helter Skeltersecond and Red third.

The boats went back to shore for some lunch to return later with a lovely sea breeze to enjoy.

 Race 3 got away from 14:51 in what was now a 15 knot breeze with gusts to 20 knots making for perfect conditions on the flat waters of Pitt Water.

With a bit more breeze all three courses were lengthened to maintain the race duration.

First boat home was the 49er FX reveling in the breeze second Bumps with HH in third.

The final race of the day saw the strongest breeze and some great sailing.

The first start was from 15:32 and the sailors did a good job to all get aroung unscathed, well the 49er did capsize but recovered and re took the lead to still be first home, from HH with Amnesia a few seconds behind.

 Sunday

Due to light winds and an overcast sky the fleet were kept on shore and eventually ventured out for the first start at 11:55 then a General recall and the second and third starts at 12:03 and 12:06 by now the breeze had filled in to 6-8 knots and gradually building.

The 49erFX flew around the course to be first home next HH then Westwind,

First Laser was Big G first Flying 11 River Rat and first Int Cadet Shmoken.

on Yardstick, River Rat from Helter Skelterwith HH and 49erFX tied in third.

The final races got away from 12:40 in a fluctuating breeze that just held in at 7-8 knots with occasional higher gusts.

The skiffs had the added issue of an incoming tide at the top mark testing the sailors skill and judgement.

There were a number of very close finishes keeping the finish crew and sailors on their toes.

First home was the 49er again with Big Gsecond and Red third.

The RO's prize for boat handling went to Jasmin Galbraith and Chloe Fisher for guiding the FX downwind with the kite up through a group of International Cadets, Optimists and Sabot who had just started and were in a tight formation, delayed the drop to clear a boat metres from the bottom mark and still had smooth rounding.

Congratulations to everyone who competed in what was a tightly fought regatta with plenty of skill on display.
