Final Training and the Elsey Trophy

Published Sun 29 Mar 2026

Final race training in the morning and the Elsey Trophy race after lunch with a BBQ to finish off the season.

The Elsey Trophy race was an old style around the bay race with an ineresting first two legs that were efectivly the port tack and then the starboart up to the (wing?) mark.

At the breefing contestants were asked to sail through the start/finish line each lap.

The fleet consisted of five NS14s two Sabres and B14s and a Pacer, with the race getting away at 13:45 in WNW breeze of about 8-10 knots gusting in the mid teens and as the race progressed the breeze built to 14 knots with gusts to 20 or a bit above.

It was an unusual race with the first leg (to the first mark) being effectivly the port tack and then the starboard tack to the wing mark (windward).

At the end of the first lap Phantom was in the lead but sailed straight on toward the first mark and needed to turn back to go through the start line putting Jumpin' Jack Flash (JJF) in the lead and bringing the leading NS's Sundaze and Viva la Vida very close. Loose Change was leading the Sabres.

Both the B14s had issues at the bottom mark with JJF capsizing and Phantom with the kite in the water and around the back of the wing, bringing the NS's close again and by the finish Phantom had a 30sec win over Jumpin' Jack Flash with Sundaze next just under 4 minutes astern with Viva la Vida next 1 min 43 furthur back.

On handicap it was

Viva la Vida Darren Eggins and Billie Nelson first Sundaze Sam and Lindy Bailey second and Spinifex Peter and Karen Davis in third.

It was great to see Jack Whittle and his kids Alby and Nelly out in a Pacer and they narowly missed a win by not sailing through the finish line on one of the laps.

That is it for this season so watch out for an advise when we have trophy night probably early in May.
