Opening Day 2020-21 and Trophies for 2019-20

Published Sun 27 Sep 2020

A very cool day and breeze greeted the sailors as season 2020-21 kicked off, a good fleet and some lively racing followed and once ashore and refreshed the Trophies for 2019-20 were presented.

As the race got away at 14:00 a solid SW breeze of 12-14 knots and the odd gust to 20 knots made for interesting racing.

The fleet consisted of five NS14s four Sabres and two B14s with two of the Sabres out of the race by the end.

It was an even start with Pumpkin Eater a bit keen jumping the start by a good 2-3 boat lengths and not going back for a while giving  the rest of the fleet a head start.

Early Warning was soon well clear and Phantom with brand new inexperienced crew in amongst the NS14s with Serenity staying clear of the others for the entire race.

Finn and Ben in Hedgehog stayed with the fleet and Pumpkin Eater fought back from the start slip up and was hot on the heals of the other NS's.

Wasabi had a good lead over Loose Change with LMG after dredging the bottom with the mast and Wettas both retiring.

Early Warning had a clear win from Phantom who chose not to try the kite first time out with Serenity holding off Viva la Vida and Sundaze next then Pumpkin Eater who had done well to close the gap and Hedgehog a little further astern.

Wasdabi had a good three and a half minute lead over Loose Change.

On Handicap it was

Pumpkin Eater Melinda Lord and Georgia Ottway from Early Warning Ross Daley and Tony Van Galen and Serenity Scott Wilkie and Lucas Foerder in third.

Next week we start the training program from 9:00 and in the afternoon Pennants one and two.
