Pennants 5 & 6 plus week three of training

Published Sun 30 Oct 2022

A great day reasonable breeze and a bit of sun saw lots of trainees on the water in the morning and a bumper fleet for the pennants

It was a long day for those involved with the training in the morning right through until the end of the second pennant for the day.

Pennant 5 got away at 13:16 in a shifty NW breeze of around 7 or 8 knots with six Sabres, four NS14s three B14s and  Jayden Gadischke in his Open Skiff.

It was an even start with the exception of Spinifex who was late to the party and the B14s hitting the lead and having a great battle all race swapping positions on a few occasions. The NS14s spread out a bit with Sundaze back on the water a clear leader. In the Sabres Apisca and Sweet Disposition had a good battle and Loose Change only a few seconds back. By the finish which was shortened to the bottom mark it was Phantom first from Bang Bang with Early Warning next, the first NS14 was Sundaze nearly three minutes clear of Viva la Vida with Noiseworks another four minutes astern. In the Sabres Apisca Jo-Anne Verrier took the gun from Sweet Disposition Lauren Keil and Loose Change Phil Bloomfield third with the first of the "new" sailors Wind Wizard Sarah Michael from About Time Sarah Heywood and On the Edge Shane Gorringe at the rear.

Pennant 6

After a substancial wait to re set the course and hope for the breeze to settle the race got away on a much shortned course at 15:17 with a reduced fleet as only two of the Sabres stayed out on the water so the fleet was four NS 14s three B14s two Sabres and the Open skiff.

The breeze after swinging all over the place settled back into the NW but had dropped to around five knots and it was a close start with most of the fleet all at the boat end in a pretty tight bunch. Up the first windward the breeze moved around a bit with the B14s in a tight group at the top mark, with Sundaze first of the NS14s and Apisca out in front of the Sabres.

The race was again finished at the bottom mark with Phantom first from a photo finish between Bang Bang closing the gap to just fall short at the line from Early Warning and the NS14s has a great race end with all the boats rounding the bottom mark in a tight group and by the finish it was Sundaze first from Spinifex with Noiseworks next and Viva la Vida at the rear.
