Trophy Races 26th Feb 2023

Published Sun 26 Feb 2023

Another session of Race Training in the morning followed by three short Trophy Races in the afternoon, and after the wind came in quite hard all boats went ashore after the second race.

It was great to host a number of Lindisfarne sailors who tried out sailing an NS at MPYC.

The first race got away at 13:15 with a fleet of four Sabres four NS14s and three B14s in a nice 11-14knot southerly, it was a pretty even start with Phantom just clear of Early Warning with Bang Bang back a little and Serenity the firat of the NS14s ahead of Viva la Vida, in the Sabres Apisca was ahead with the two Sarah's locked in a tight battle next. On the second lap Early Warning went out to the right and moved into the lead at the top mark from Phantom who got over the top and moved back into the lead on the down wind. By the finish it had lightened off a fair bit and Phantom held on to take the gun over Early Warning with Bang Bang steadily closing the gap as the breeze lightened. In the NS14s it was Serenity from Viva la Vida from Noiseworks and Take Five just clear of the first Sabre Apisca with About Time taking bragging rights from Wind Wizard.

On handicap the result was

Early Warning Ross Daley and Tony VanGalen first, Viva la Vida Darren Eggins and Georgia Ottway second and Bang Bang Stephen Mitchell and Adrianne Daley third.

Race 2

The Breeze had built quite a bit by start time of 14:53 with 16-23 knots testing some of the newer sailors with On the Edge, Wind Wizard, Noiseworks, Bang Bang not starting the race. It was a good start with Viva la Vida revelling in the fresh conditions and being right up with the B's at the top mark where Early Warning was first around and took off for the wing mark in the shortened race on a beam reach so no spinnaker.

By the bottom mark it was still Early Warning from Phantom with Vivala Vida not far in arrears and then Serenity.

Early Warning held on to the top mark and with the sausage came a chance to fly the kite with EW going a bit too far before the jibe letting Phantom through though at the bottom mark it was neck and neck. Phantom held on to lead the rest of the race but by the finish the gap was a mere 6 seconds with Viva la Vida less than two minutes furthur astern. Apisa was the only Sabre to finish after About Time retired and Serenity the only other NS14 afeter Take Five retired.

On handicap it was Viva la Vida first from Serenity Scott Wilkie and A Rayner with Early Warning third.

Overall it was

Viva La Vida first Early Warning Second and Serenity third.

Next week is another Trophy race day as the B14s will be away at their State Titles at Ulverstone.
